Adults & Play

Adults do play a lot, but we mostly put boundaries around our play. We have games, sports, hobbies, ceremonies and rituals. Play can be disruptive and destabilizing, so it makes sense that societies place limitations on it. The downside of this is that sometimes we need the disruption that can come from creative exploration and boundary crossing. Unlike many other animals that play, we do not lose the capacity to play once we have matured. We are potentially lifelong learners and innovators and so we are potentially lifelong players. The Play State training is about learning to access play’s power when we need it.

What Is Play?

Play is the thing we want to do. Play is often challenging and it is sometimes hard, but we still want to do it. Play enlivens us and the people around us. Learning is fun when we play. Developmentally, the more we learn, the more we play. When we play, we learn things better and we enjoy the process. While we play, we take disparate ideas, feelings, experiences, and process and integrate them. In play, we create. Play brings our whole minds and bodies to experimentation, to bringing things together that don’t seem to fit, to following meandering hunches, to taking concepts to their logical conclusions and beyond, and to reveling in novelty. In play, we go beyond the known. Play is our true compass in life. We may pretend when we play, but in a play-state we know if we are on track or not because the play either engages us or it does not.
